About this collection
This collection spans the whole of Ireland. With over a third of its newspapers coming from Northern Ireland, a vivid range of perspectives is ensured.
These newspapers capture the extraordinary changes since the foundation of the Irish Free State (Saorstát Éireann) alongside the Province of Northern Ireland in 1922. he period witnessed the entrenchment of religious sectarianism, as each state defined itself by its majority Christian denomination. The global trauma of the Second World War is well represented in the newspapers - soldiers enlisted across the island for the Allied forces, despite the South using the euphemism 'the Emergency'. These sources reflect the improved educational opportunities for Northern Ireland from 1945 and the indirect rise of political agitation and radicalism that resulted. The political radicalism that accompanied The Troubles up to their formal end with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 is reported on at every step in this collection. Sources provide a detailed account of the social transformation of the island (especially the Republic) from a rural backwater to a thriving 'Celtic Tiger', central to the global software and pharmaceutical industries.
