Huntingdonshire history and heritage

Huntingdonshire was settled as a county in Anglo-Saxon times. Its boundaries have hardly changed since the Domesday Survey.

After Rutland, Huntingdonshire is the smallest county in England. Its highest point is just 263 feet above sea level. In 1154, the entire county was declared a forest by Henry II.

Oliver Cromwell was born in the town of Huntingdon. The county also claims to be the home of the winter ball game and accepted IOC sport, bandy. St Neots has the highest population in the county, followed by Huntingdon and St Ives. All those towns are located on the banks of the Great Ouse.

Huntingdonshire is mainly rural. Much of its fenland was once underwater. As a result, it has highly fertile farmland specialising in cereal crops, potatoes, sugar beets and vegetables.

Flowing through Huntingdonshire’s fenlands, River Great Ouse was historically an important commercial navigation route.
